What is Spinal Decompression?
The ultra-complex and interconnected system of bones, muscles and ligaments that comprise the spine can become susceptible to injury and other degenerative changes as you age. When one region of the spine begins to deteriorate, others often follow. This typically leads to chronic and inhibiting back pain that can significantly minimize your overall quality of life. In fact, back pain is extremely common and even remains the number one cause of work-related disability in the United States. Despite its prevalence amongst our population, however, there are many advanced, non-invasive methods of care to alleviate upper, middle and lower back pain.
One of the innovative treatments most frequently used to address ongoing back pain is known as spinal decompression. A cornerstone of most physical therapy regimens, spinal decompression helps relieve patients’ back pain by decompressing the back and, as a result, relieving undue strain on the spine. This treatment often yields numerous benefits, such as:
- Relief from back pain, tingling and other uncomfortable symptoms commonly associated with spinal issues
- Improved flexibility and diminished stiffness, which often allows the patient to fully participate in the activities they love without being hindered by pain
- Better circulation of the body’s natural replenishing components, such as water, oxygen and other nutritious fluids to bulging or herniated intervertebral discs
- Reduced pressure upon the spine, which can sometimes correct the root causes of back pain
- The mitigation of herniated or bulging intervertebral discs
If a patient is recommended by the OrthoCARE Institute team for spinal decompression treatment, they will visit a licensed physical therapist. As part of the integrated Lumin Health system, we can even help you make an appointment at InMotion Rehab, our physical therapy division, quickly and conveniently.
Once the patient is with their physical therapist, they will be fitted with a comfortable harness. After the harness is properly situated, the patient lies down on a specially-designed table that is connected to an advanced computer system. Using this computer, the physical therapist personalizes a spinal decompression therapy session built to meet the unique needs of the individual patient. During this time, the spine is gently mobilized and stretched. This movement pulls wayward disc matter back into the center of the intervertebral discs while promoting the circulation of healthy fluids.
An average spinal decompression therapy session lasts for approximately 30 – 45 minutes. Generally, the patients receive a number of treatments over a 5 – 7 week period to ensure optimal healing. Through a strict spinal decompression program, many patients achieve relief from:
- Pinched or damaged spinal nerve roots
- Spinal stenosis, a painful condition in which the spinal canal abnormally narrows and compresses nearby tissue
- Degenerative disc disease
- Bulging or ruptured intervertebral discs
- Back pain in the upper, middle and/or lower spine
- Impaired facet joints
For many of our patients, spinal decompression therapy offers an innovative and customizable alternative to surgery or other invasive treatments. Like most conservative methods of care, spinal decompression can be highly beneficial when completed in tandem with additional treatments like physical therapy or specific lifestyle changes.
At OrthoCARE Institute, our team of experienced bone, joint and spine specialists is committed to transforming your health through advanced, patient-focused treatment. Whether you have been encountering back pain for years or have been struck by your first episode of spine-related complications, we are dedicated to helping you regain your quality of life.
During your initial consultation, one of our friendly orthopedic experts will carefully assess your medical history, physical state and symptoms. Based on what we discover, we can then create an integrated treatment plan designed to meet your unique needs. If it is determined that your discomfort stems from strain upon the spinal column, spinal decompression therapy may be recommended.
Each spinal decompression therapy session is formulated to meet the specific needs of the patient. For this reason, the duration of a session, as well as the overall number of sessions advised, will differ from person to person. At your spinal decompression appointment, our highly-qualified physical therapists will ensure your comfort and relaxation through the entire process. The pain-relieving results of spinal decompression therapy are often noticeable immediately after a session and continue to improve over time.
