What is Loose Body Removal?
When the knee joint experiences sudden impact, severe trauma, illness or degeneration, fragments of bone, cartilage and tissue may become dislodged from their original location. Oftentimes, these pieces will float within the knee joint and interfere with proper functioning. A loose body removal procedure is performed with the primary goal of extracting these unwanted, roaming materials so that the joint can properly heal and operate effectively.
Loose body removal surgery is almost always performed as a minimally invasive procedure, where only tiny incisions are necessary. Usually, a very small arthroscopic camera is used to allow the surgeon to see inside of the knee joint and quickly locate the loose body. The surgeon will then clean the joint by carefully removing the drifting material.
Because loose body removal is a minimally invasive procedure, it yields significantly smaller risks of scarring and trauma to surrounding tissues when compared with traditional open surgery. Additionally, blood loss is usually minimal. The average loose body removal surgery requires only 2 – 4 weeks in total to heal.

Generally, if a loose body is large enough to cause noticeable symptoms, then it must be removed before relief can be obtained. If loose pieces in the knee joint are the underlying cause of the pain, swelling or locking of the knee joint, loose body removal surgery may become necessary.
OrthoCARE Institute regularly performs loose body removal procedures for patients suffering from meandering components of the knee joint. Our highly-acclaimed surgeons implement a number of minimally invasive surgeries to help patients reduce pain and improve their quality of life.
